The Capable Wife Part 5

She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.  Proverbs 31: 21-22

Our Capable Wife does everything she can to take care of her family.  Not just her family, her entire house (in that day it would include slaves and servants as well).  She has worked for so long so hard, that when rough times come, she knows they are taken care of.

In biblical times, Scarlet was a color of power, wealth, luxury.  Scarlet dye in that time came from a tiny little bug, so small that it is like a grain of sand.  So it took time and money to make and entire robe of scarlet. Our Capable Wife knows that her family and her servants are clothed to the very best of her ability.  They are warm and secure.  Are they in Polo?  No, not necessarily.  But they are dressed in well made clothing and appropriately for the weather.

She made herself clothing…clothing of silk (more bugs, ugh) and purple.  Purple came from a small sea snail and took a very long time to get it right!  So we see she is dressed also in well made clothing.

Now, in no way shape or form am I suggesting that you need to go and spend a ton of money on clothing.  I’m not saying you need to take up sewing either.  Here’s a small hint:  I have a monthly budget for the family for clothing, and to get the best bang for my buck, I usually hit the local second hand stores.  I have found name brand, new with tags, clothing for bargain basement prices.  And that is saying a lot…especially when you are dressing 3 picky teenage girls and 3 rough and tumble destructicon boys.  Remember the name of my blog???

I also have a rule, if we are leaving the house, no holey, torn, ripped, or stained clothing.  (Beach or hiking is different)  When we leave the house, hairs must be brushed, faces washed, teeth brushed, and clean neat clothing must be put on.  All my household is clothed appropriately – weather included.  On my FAQ board I list the weather of the day, and how that will feel in our hot Florida Sun.  That way they are dressed appropriately for the weather as well!!!

Tuesday Ironing Day

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:5

Papi truly believes that I am one of the weirdest people on the face of the earth.  Why would he think that?  Well, I hate to iron! No, seriously, I HATE to iron.  I would rather clean the toilets by hand with no gloves then iron.  I think part of the reason I hate it so much is that I am really very exponentially bad at it.  I don’t iron wrinkles out, I iron them in!  The only time I’m halfway successful at ironing is when it’s a whole piece of cloth, not cut out, ready to sew.  Papi thinks this is absolutely hilarious and will usually patiently ask what I’m wearing Sunday morning so that he can iron it for me. The truth of the matter is, no matter how much I hate to iron, and hate to admit this, clothes just look better when all of the wrinkles have been ironed out.

And isn’t that just what God does for us????

He looks at our souls, and if we ask, washes them clean.  But that is only the very first part of His relationship with us.  In His infinite wisdom, He allows us to go through trials and tribulations.  Successfully trans versing these “sloughs of despond” depend on us leaning on Him.  And slowly, ever so slowly, He uses His iron to smooth all the wrinkles. My greatest wrinkle (at the moment) is my temper.  But I know, because He’s shown me before, that the more time I spend reading His Word and talking to Him, the easier it is during the day to control my temper.  If you will, He spends time smoothing out the wrinkle of my temper.

Your wrinkle may be something quite large, like addiction, or something relatively small, like time management (or lack thereof).  Either way, some days you may think that the wrinkle is just too big, or you can’t possibly iron it out.  And YOU can’t.

Isaiah 40:27 – 29 Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

God is bigger than any wrinkle in your life.  He will help you to iron it out.  Don’t give up!!!!

Ride the storm

So, what is your biggest wrinkle?  Or maybe you don’t have any BIG wrinkles, just lots and lots of little ones all over your life.  Can you let Him help you smooth them out?  Trust me, He irons so much better than any of US!!!

Daily Household Assignments:

1. Make your bed .

2. Wash dishes as they get dirty, teach your kids to rinse their plates right away (if they can reach the sink)

3. Today is Tuesday Iron Day, so whip out that ironing board ladies!!!  Get to work on that huge stack of ironing from Monday. Take your time.  If you rush, you will iron in wrinkles, not iron them out. (Hmmmmmm, I wonder what God is trying to tell us with that?) Ironing is very soothing once you get into the routine of it, so while you are ironing, think very hard about the major wrinkles in your life.  Give them up to the Master Ironer.  Let Him take care of your spiritual ironing for you.

4.  How much progress have you made on winnowing out your clothing?  All sorted out?  No?  That’s ok.  Keep plodding along.  Even an hour a day every day this week and you will make loads (ahem) of progress.
