Freezer Meal Mass Cook

Someone gave me a book several years ago called “The Occasional Cook” by Cyndy Salzmann. And for the life of me, I’ve never successfully figured out how to do it! Even with step by step instructions.

If you are anything like me, carving out 8 hours in one day to cook 21 meals just doesn’t work. Especially adding in the shopping time as well!

But this month, I had an idea. No one said I had to do ALL of the cooking in one day! So I worked for an hour or so a couple of days and ended up with several meals that I can pop into the crockpot before we head out to football and cheer. It worked so well, I may continue doing it! I’m going to walk you through what I did…and maybe you’ll be inspired too!!!!

Day 1: Step 1: Go shopping! I went to Sams and got everything I could on my list. (I’ll put the list 聽at the end of the post). Step 2: Before I went to bed, I put 2 pork roasts into my crockpot, sprinkled onion flakes on it, and set it for 8 hours. When I woke up – it was done!!!
Day 1 took 2 1/2 hours.

 

Day 2: Step 1: Put the roast in the fridge to cool.
Step 2: Chunk 1 1/2 onions and chop 1 1/2 onions.
Step 3: Put 3 whole chickens into a giant stockpot. Sprinkle with garlic salt. Add 1 of the chunked onions. Cover with water. Simmer for 3 – 4 hours or until chicken is falling off the bone.
Step 4: Chunk 1 carrot for each person in your household.
Step 5: Put Roast, carrots, and broth made from cooking roast into a 1 gallon freezer bag. Seal bag, remove as much air as possible. Label and Freeze.

*Note about labeling. I write on the ziploc bag the directions for cooking – that way I don’t have to search out the recipe when I want to pop it in the crockpot or oven.

** Pot roast Label: Heat roast and carrots in broth with potatoes. – this is a great crockpot set it and forget it meal!

Step 6: Remove chicken from heat and allow to cool. Take meat off of bone, stick meat in fridge to cool over night.

Day 2 took the longest, 6 hours, but most of that wasn’t active cooking…..just hanging out around the house. We used the heat from the stewing chickens to help some homemade bread rise! 馃槈

 

Day 3: Step 1: Assemble Chicken Divan. (This is now a family favorite!) Spray 2 13 X 9 X 2 baking dishes with cooking oil. Put frozen broccoli in bottom of pans. Top with shredded chicken. Combine 1 huge can of cream of chicken soup, 1 1/3 cup of mayo, and 2 t. lemon juice. Spread over chicken evenly. Top with 1 cup of shredded cheese – per pan! Sprinkle both pans with bread crumbs.
This looked so good – we had it for lunch! Bake at 350* for 25 – 30 minutes. If freezing. Cover tightly with foil and label, then freeze.
Step 2: (We did this while the Divan was cooking) Assemble Chicken and Dumplings. Place shredded Chicken, 2 16 oz. package of frozen mixed vegetables, poultry seasoning, and onion powder in 2 1- gallon freezer bags. Make sure you double bag this! Label this way: Place bag contents in crockpot, add 6 to 7 cups of chicken broth. Cook on low for 8 hours. 30 minutes before eating, add 2/3 cup milk, drop favorite dumpling mixture in and push down into broth. Each bag made 1 meal for us – with a salad.
Day 3 took 1 1/2 hours.

 

Day 4: 聽Step 1: Assemble Basic Ground Meat Mixture (uncooked). 聽Mix 4 pounds ground beef, 2 eggs, 1 1/2 bread crumbs, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1 cup shredded carrots, 1 t salt, and 1/2 t pepper.

Step 2: 聽To 1/2 of above. 聽Add 1/2 cup milk and 2 cloves crushed garlic (or more to taste!) 聽Mix well. 聽Shape into 2 inch meatballs. 聽Bake at 400* F for 20 minutes.

Step 3: 聽To other 1/2, add 1/2 cup milk, 2 tsp sage leaves, and 4 T catsup. 聽Place mixture into 1 gallon freezer bag and flatten. 聽Label and freeze. 聽Label should say: Thaw. 聽Shape mixture into loaf pan and bake at 350* F 45 – 60 minutes. 聽During last 10 minutes, top with a mixture of 1/3 cup catsup, 1 T mustard, and 3 T brown sugar.

Step 4: 聽When Meatballs are done, cool . 聽After cooled, transfer meatballs to 1 gallon freezer bag. 聽Pour 2 cups marinara sauce over the meatballs. 聽Double bag. 聽Label and freeze. 聽Label should say: 聽Thaw. 聽Warm in crockpot on low for 8 hours. 聽Use for spaghetti and meatballs or for Italian meatball subs!

Step 5: 聽Brown 4 pounds ground beef, the rest of the onion, 4 t minced garlic, 2 t salt, and 2 t pepper. 聽Drain fat.

Step 6: 聽Assemble Cheeseburger Casserole. 聽Mix 1/2 of ground meat mixture with 16 oz. cubed velveeta, 2/3 cup catsup and 16 oz cooked package of elbow macaroni. 聽(Macaroni should not be cooked all the way through). 聽Place in 2 1 gallon bags. 聽Double bag. 聽Label and freeze. 聽Label should read: Thaw. 聽Place mixture in baking dish. 聽Heat in 350* oven for 30 minutes.

Step 7: 聽Assemble Popover Pizza. 聽Mix other 1/2 of ground meat mixture with 6 cups pasta sauce. 聽Put in 2 1 gallon freezer bags. 聽Double bag. 聽Label and Freeze. 聽Label should read: Thaw. 聽Put meat and sauce in a 9 x 5 in baking dish. 聽Top with 4 cups mozzarella cheese. 聽Unroll 1 tube crescent rolls and fit on top of casserole. 聽Sprinkle with 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. 聽Bake at 375* for 30 – 35 minutes until crust is golden and filling is hot.

Day 4 took 1 1/2 hours.

Total shopping, cooking, and assembling time: 聽11 1/2 hours spread over 4 days. 聽Total meals cooked/assembled/frozen for my family of 9: 8. 聽It would be way more for a smaller family.

A Sleepless Night

Listening to the sounds of my house as they slumber,

Even the fur babies get into the act!

Tossing and turning, I can’t sleep.

Simon the greyhounds chuffs and squeals in his sleep. 聽What is he chasing? A rabbit?

Is he reliving his glory days as a racer?

Or is it something more mundane, like someone petting his tummy.

Is that what makes him sigh contentedly?

The 聽house is abuzz with noise…..so is my mind.

School Has Begun!

The official start of school was yesterday, and it is going great guns!!! 聽There was blood, sweat, and tears! 聽OK….maybe not blood, but definitely sweat and tears.

We began with a unit study on Self Control. 聽We have a Self Control Goal (complete with posterboard) for the next 6 weeks. 聽We have to get 110 stars AS A FAMILY 聽for going above and beyond when it comes to Self Control. 聽This includes Controlling our Eating, our Anger, our Thoughts, etc. 聽It’s close to the end of Day 2, and we have 3 stars. 聽Almost all of them for Spending More Time on Spiritual Pursuits.

We have a First Week of School Project. 聽Every day we will be doing something different to celebrate the First Week of School.

Monday – we took the First Day of School Pictures that every homeschooler takes, with the kids holding up signs saying what grade they are in.

Tuesday – today I wrote up the following questions and they had to answer them.

1. 聽What can YOU do to have a great year this year? 聽The best answer: Barbie. “I vow to concentrate and reach for good grades.”

2. 聽What can I do to help you succeed this year? 聽The best answer: BAM!. “If you see me start to give up help me.” (They all had answers similar to that, so I need to do more encouraging.)

3. What do YOU hope to learn this year? The best answer: Eyes. “I hope to lean about God.” (misspelling is his)

4. Our family should be ____________________ every day! The best answer: Kissy. “I think our family should be respectful all the time to one anothe everday.” (misspelling is hers)

5. School is important because __________________. The best answer: Barbie. “School is important because it teaches you how to survive the business world.”

Wednesday – we will be creating our own “Twitter” accounts (fake)

Thursday – each child will be summing up his slogan for the day of his twitter account….in other words, creating a “tweet”.

We started our Language Arts books, and Barbie started her English III books. 聽It’s going to be an adjustment, but I can’t say enough about how much I like the IBLP Language Arts books. 聽It already has my 2nd and 3rd grader beginning basic outlines. 聽What a great skill to learn!!!!!!

All 3 girls are loving their individual science classes. 聽And I’m caught up on grading! 聽(Minor miracle, I won’t be for long!)

Pumped for PiYo

I’ve shared with you all some of my struggles with working out. 聽And I have to admit….I am a sloth. 聽I would much rather sit on the couch watching #SharkWeek and eating bonbons than I would working out at ANYTHING!!!

But on June 26th I made a decision. 聽On that day i decided I would do almost ANYTHING to get healthier. 聽I had several reasons for getting healthier.

Reason #1: 聽1 Corinthians 6:19聽What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is聽in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 聽As a Christ follower, I need to realize and respect that my body is not my own. 聽I am a temple of the Lord Jesus. 聽I am also a living representation of Him. 聽So, if I can’t deal with the slothful slovenly body that I have now, how is someone else going to take me seriously when I tell them about Jesus?

Reason #2: I want to be around for my kids, and my grandkids, and my great grandkids. 聽Not only do I want to be around…but I want to be active. 聽I want to play with them and hang out with them and run with them, not sleep on the couch while they are outside playing catch. 聽And that is exactly what is happening now. 馃槮

Reason #3: Moment of truth – I’d love to have another baby. 聽But my body would never carry one right now, I’m just not healthy enough. 聽And if we adopted, I’d never make it through the sleepless nights.

I had these 3 reasons…and they are darn good ones. 聽But now what? 聽That’s where my friend A comes in. 聽I met her on facebook and we have had lots of chats about homeschooling, and being the mother to boys, and God, and a couple about being healthy. 聽Not that many, because quite frankly she is one of those women…you know…the skinny muscular women that look like they could slip into a bikini at any given moment and not even blink! 聽Yep…..she’s one of those. 聽But she is also incredibly sweet and amazing and I knew she did this shakeology thingy…so I asked her. 聽I gave her impossible parameters. 聽I needed a work out that was low impact because of asthma and other issues. 聽I really like doing yoga but hate working out period. 聽And I don’t even stick with the yoga long term. 聽And I have like NO time. 聽Every time the doctor said I needed to work out, I would start outlining my day and ask him when exactly I should work out! 聽And I couldn’t go on a crazy meal plan that I couldn’t afford and no one else would eat – because I REFUSE聽to make separate meals.

She gave me 2 possible work outs and let me compare them. 聽I even drew up a Pros and Cons sheet. 聽I talked to my mom (Papi was out of town) and the girls and decided I would do PiYo because even though I HATE Pilates I LOVE Yoga! 聽I ordered the challenge pack and waited very impatiently for my dvd’s and shake mix to come in. (I started with strawberry because I love strawberry anything.)

On July 3rd my items were in and I was so excited. 聽I tried one of the shakes that night! 聽It was very good with little after taste…which is awesome because I will use ANY excuse NOT to do this kind of thing. 聽My friend A had started an online accountability group for those of us taking this PiYo challenge.

July 4

Hi everyone! I’m excited to be here! My name is Jessica. I’m 42. Mom of 6. Homeschooler. Married 15 years. I’m really excited to get into shape. I (right now) have the full support of all my family (including my moms who lives with us). I had my first shake yesterday (strawberry sea salt) for an afternoon snack. It was so filling, I almost didn’t eat dinner! Have a blessed day everyone!!!!!

Quick question before i get ready for church: how do you eat all this food???? I’m really struggling to eat all the veggies and protein every day especially. Using PiYo and my calorie target is a little over 1800, so I’m shooting for 1800. 聽(Yes, I am still really struggling to eat all the food!!!!)

Align is done. I had to modify almost everything. But I loved most of the moves. Warrior 1 and 2 have been my favorite moves for 15 + years! I’m exhausted now…but I have cheer tonight , so I need to get moving!!!!!! Oh! And redid my schedule so that I’m working out about an hour after I get up. That always has worked best for me in the past.

July 8

Define Lower Body done. That was fun! I love yoga! ijs
I had to edit to let you know. 4 of my 6 kids joined me in the workout this morning. 1 girl and my 3 boys. The other 2 girls were going around the room correcting postures. It felt like I was in a gym class!!!!

Define upperbody – for those of you saying it wasn’t as much of a workout – PTTHT!!!! I was sweating my hiney off, my arms are totally shaking. BUT I managed the crouching crow pushups!!! WooHoo!!!!!
I am now going to the beach…so nya nya!

July 10 路聽

SWEAT confession time. I couldn’t finish it. My muscles literally collapsed, I almost fell. I only had 14 minutes left. I know that I can do this. I WILL do this. I have cheer tonight, so that’s another 2 hours of sweating my butt off. I’m looking forward to conquering SWEAT next Monday.

Do you hear me screaming with joy????!!!!!!
I did define lower today with NO CHAIR!!!!!! with Aunt Flo too! I had to go into childs pse a couple times in the last 5 minutes, and I found the last 5 minutes hard to do because my hands were sliding all over the place….but I DID IT!!!!! Very little modifications!!!! I have been sitting at my computer playing on facebook trying to recover because I might fall if I try to stand right now. But I am going to be on a HIGH ALL DAY LONG!

Bought a 750ml water bottle at GMC today for 99cents!! They had a couple of them, so i might go back and get the others. They are pretty and i can take then to the track.

Define upper body done. Hating working out in front of hubby. He was very encouraging today though, in going to challenge him to do sweat with me tomorrow.

July 14

SWEAT done today. I’m sitting here at the computer recovering. Hubby didn’t join me today, but dd13, dd12, and ds8 did. dd13 dropped out with 12 minutes to go, I dropped out with 10 minutes to go, dd12 dropped out with me. DS8 is a BEAST! The boy completed it all and then did 50 sit ups and 50 push ups afterwards!!!!!!! He’s not even sweating very much.

And I weighed in today…..I lost 4 pounds last week. Double my goal. I can’t see it or feel it yet, but that is super encouraging. (Especially since my asthma and thyroid kicked in last night and laid me on the couch for several hours).

I CAN DO THIS. I WILL GET HEALTHIER.

Define Lower Body done. I really love this workout. My legs are already somewhat strong, so doing this work out makes me FEEL strong. I really do need to get those yoga gloves though. I have to come out of so many poses because my hands are sliding!!!!

July 16

Core this morning is done! I struggled with it, having to “rest” several times. But I didn’t stop. i kept pushing – though it was not easy to figure out what my body was supposed to be doing. i think I may be doing some of the moves incorrectly, because my shoulders are sore.
Also, I know that most of you stay away from salt….but I need to make sure my balance is correct, so I added a tiny bit of salt to my water this morning. I’ll be doing that every morning to make sure that I don’t throw my body out of whack.

Still can’t do SWEAT all the way through. But I can see while doing it where I am getting stronger. Able to extend on things I wasn’t before! And my tricep pushup is getting stronger. Instead of only going down 1 or 2 inches, I’m able to be only 2 inches from the floor!!!

CORE literally brought me to tears today. I was so frustrated with not being able to figure out what I was supposed to be doing and then when I thought I had, not feeling it in my CORE but in my arms or legs. Hubby said I was doing then right, but still.. .feeling slightly defeated today.

Define upper body done. Can i say that I’m actually looking forward to a work out called buns? My legs are stronger than my arms!

OK. I didn’t get the work out done this morning. i had a rough evening and night last night…didn’t sleep well and just am flat exhausted. I will attempt it this afternoon before cheer tryouts if I can. On a good note…I lost another two pounds!

BUNS done! I couldn’t do everything but I LOVED that one! I would like doing that every day!

I totally have to say this. This is the only workout I’ve ever done where I am working my butt off….I mean my muscles are shaking and hurting during it. But as I go about the rest of my day I am not hurting. Yes, I get a little twinge every once in a while when I move just the right way…but I’m not crippled in pain. I LOVE it. I know I’m working hard, the muscles are working most definitely. But I’ve always stopped before because of the pain.

Core done. Ugh. Still hate it…but it didn’t make me cry this time!!

Not looking forward to working out this morning…. . I’m sore!!!LOL. But I’ll be making up my rest day in about 10 minutes.
I did notice something strange this morning and last. My mom makes breakfast for us before she heads off to work. Both days she has made bacon or sausage. Both days the greasy smell has made me slightly nauseous. And last night, egg roll turned my tummy some.
Conclusion: eating cleaner is making my body want to eat cleaner!

Sweat kind of done. I still cant get through the whole thing. Today i stopped at 13 minutes left. But what i did, i did with no modifications. On to the cheer draft, after my shower!

Hubby took me on a date tonight…..for a smoothie(kind of healthy) and to target to buy yoga gloves. Cuz that’s how we roll.lol. i guess that’s what 17 years and 6 kids does to your date life.

Strength intervals was hard! 5 minutes left and i was done. I used that time to stretch my legs out. Going to do my cheer workout this afternoon.
Oh…and thank you A聽for the shake sample….i now know to take chocolate off my list.

Sweat done…got further into it before my legs started to buckle!!!7::50 left! Woohoo!!!! Conditioning with my cheer girls tonight too!!!

Core….ran out of steam with 6 minutes left. I didn’t eat near enough yesterday and i can tell. I have got to eat more!
In good news, i am down a total of 8 pounds. That is half my goal!!!

I’m taking a rest day today….my last one was last Tuesday and my body is killing me!!
I will be out at the track tonight for a stunt clinic, so after that while I’m waiting for football practice to be over, I’m going to walk/run the track.
Just to hold myself accountable: tomorrow will be buns and Friday will be drench. I’ll. Be at the track on Friday night walking/running as well.

BUNS done! Man that burns!!! Love it! I can already see changes in my booty. When i was in high school I was a white girl with a donkey booty. Literally. guys used to put soda cans on my hiney. It was a running joke in my 98% black high school that I had a black girls butt. Now I have an upside down heart shape – and I ain’t lovin it. I want the black girl butt again!!!!!

Doing buns today, and my greyhound decided to join me….hard to workout when a huge dog is on your mat! He so kindly left huge muddy paw prints too.

I’m really frustrated today.
I took my measurements and did a fitness test, results are after 25 days….
Weight – down 5 pounds (up 3 from last week)
Waist – down 3.5 inches
Hips – down 2 inches
Chest – down 1.5 inches (I didn’t want to go down here)
Right arm – up .5 inches
left arm – same
right thigh – up .5 inches
left thigh – up 1.5 inches
Resting Heart rate – up 4 bpm
Vertical leap – up 1.25 inches
Push ups – up 2
toe touch – down 3 more inches (still can’t touch my toes)
Ins and outs – up 5
wall squat – up 4 seconds
first hr max – down 18 bpm (shouldn’t this be going up?)
third hr max – down 28 pbm

It’s a mixed bag and I am just really upset. I can’t really see any difference in my body at all except these weird divots in my stomach and on my thighs and booty. I just wanna cry today (I’m hoping it’s just pms)

Due to unforseen family things AND running out of my thyroid medication, I went AWOL this weekend. I still don’t have my thyroid meds…but I did do Definte Lower Body this morning. no stopping and no modifications. It’s a struggle to get out of bed when I’m out of thyroid meds – so I am counting that as a win!

Had to share this…vanilla shakeology, milk, frozen cherries, low fat chocolate syrup,and ice. It was so yummy!!!!

OK….so still don’t have my thyroid meds. yesterday I worked my hiney off with my cheerleaders. I even did a very horrible cartwheel. This morning I did Upper Body define. Praying I get my thyroid soon!

I really fell off the PiYo wagon this week…not having my thyroid in combination with cheer season and school upon me just overwhelmed me. I’m praying my thyroid meds come in this weekend so that I can start back on Monday with a bang!!!! I want to pick up where I left off with Sculpt (which I haven’t tried). This weekend is insane busy….starting today! So I have no idea if I’ll be able to work out at all.

Got my thyroid meds yesterday…took first dose this morning. Will start back up tomorrow! Woohoo!

Upper body define and i am weak! I couldn’t finish it. i went back to week 3 to build back up. I’m glad i did.

I was so tired all day..i didn’t work out this morning…but i coached this evening. I’m planning on working out tomorrow morning….x my fingers i can wake up!

Buns completed….man my legs were on fire and shaking. I had to stop and shake out a couple of times but i never turned it off! I seriously love that workout!!!!!

Taking one of chalenes tips….doing piyo moves during commercials. 40 chair squats, 20 squats, 30 sumo squats, plank, elbow plank (?), downward dog. After cheer and doing that…I’m exhausted!

25 minutes of drench and i collapsed….holy frijoles.

21 hrs

I took pictures today…..when holding them up against pictures from the first day…well, i started to cry. I haven’t been able to see the difference. The scale had only gone down 8 pounds…..so seeing this huge difference in the pictures…wow. it’s storming now…I’ll try to post a before/after tomorrow.

鈥#鈥PiYo鈥 Strength intervals done. I collapsed at 3:55 left and literally couldn’t move for a minute. But i got up and finished once i realized a body was still attached to my head!!!!

My Self Control

I really really really can’t wait for school to start…even though i have so much to do. 聽I find it ironic that our next main topic of study is Self Control. 聽Why? 聽Because I am so far behind in everything that I need to get done! 聽Between cheer and football season, the crochet projects I’ve promised to people, the sewing projects I’ve promised to people, getting ready for the Back to School Back Pack Bash at my church, catching up on my grading, and then the regular Mommy chores…I am overwhelmed and out of discipline.

Do you ever get that way? 聽I am over-committed, on a regular basis. 聽And I need to get back in control because Children in Action is starting in September and I’m not ready for that either!!!!!

So how am I going to emphasize self control when I don’t have it???? 聽First things first…I need to get back into a school routine. 聽And I have the bones of that done….I just need to really emphasize being disciplined. 聽I kept a fairly tight schedule yesterday and Barbie noticed. 聽But I got more done yesterday then I did last week! 聽I’m working on waking up early as well. 聽So we will be running a tight ship during cheer and football season so that I can get everything done.

I’ll be waking up at 5:30 am: praying, stumbling to the laundry room to start the first load of laundry, grabbing a cup of coffee (or green tea) and then going to do my morning devotion. 聽Once finished, I’ll start my second load of laundry for the day, go wake up the kids, and then work out. (Yes, I’m trying it again! 聽I’ve stuck with it for 3 weeks this time!!!)

Once the girls are up and going, I leave them in charge for the half hour it takes me to shower. 聽They will make sure the boys are ready for the day and they are ready for the day.

Then I’ll cook breakfast. 聽We’ll have breakfast while I’m reading a book to them. 聽Our first biography this year will be about Adoniram Judson (he was a missionary in Burma).

We’ll finish eating and doing our kitchen chores then head to the living room for our Family Wisdom Search. 聽Quick note on our Kitchen chores. 聽Every one has their own chores and I set the timer for 15 minutes. 聽While they are picking up the kitchen, I’m folding and then starting a new load of laundry. 聽They all come and get their pile of clothes when I call them. Our Wisdom Search we only do for about 15 minutes as well.

Then on to our Wisdom Booklet, Music, and their Project Work. 聽While they are working their projects, I’ll be cooking our main meal of the day. 聽We all eat together, do Kitchen chores, and then I’ll have about 15 minutes on the computer to check facebook while they are being silly and goofing. 馃槈 聽Or arguing with each other, depending on the day. 馃槈

Next is English. 聽Barbie is completely independent in this except for grading. 聽BAM! and Kissy are on the same level, and the boys are all on the same level. 聽So I will take turns teaching while the groups are doing independent work. 聽Because of me teaching – this will be 1/2 hour. 聽This will also give them time to study for spelling, vocabulary, and dictation quizzes. 聽How they do on their quizzes will determine if they move up a minor level or not. 馃槈

And then Math for the kids – this is pretty much independent and gives me time to grade the work they have done so far…logging it for the children that have report cards. (If we study math that week as a聽school, the kids will have a break during this time)

After Math, the boys have a break. 聽They can choose to work on what they haven’t finished school wise or their chores. 聽But let’s be honest…they’ll play!!!! 聽The girls will be taking turns doing typing lessons. 聽On days they don’t have typing, they have the same choices as the boys (except for Barbie…she has SAT prep class). 聽What will I be doing? 聽Working on my “to do” list of the day.

Now it’s Super Clean Time. 聽We all work together cleaning one room of the house. 聽We get as much done as we can in 1/2 hour. 聽The kids hate this time…but they like it better than doing it individually. 聽We power through!!!!!

Then the girls will do their Independent Science while the boys take turns playing on the computer. 聽(If we have science as a school that week, the girls will not have science). 聽I will be working more on my “to do” list! 聽After about 1/2 hour everyone has free time! 聽Me too!!!! 聽This is when I get to crochet, sew, or read! 聽 聽Then I’ll get our snack ready, and pre prepare anything we need for dinner. 聽We’ll have a snack…clean up real quick, and get ready for football!

When we all get home, we take turns showering, and eating. 聽We are doing a family wisdom search at that time as well! 聽I will tuck all the kids in…and then read myself to sleep!

After looking at all of that, do you see why I need self control??????

If I don’t, I will easily throw everything that needs to be done and play on facebook or computer games all day. 聽It’s way too easy to do!!!!!

Reading all of that made me tired!!!! 聽And it’s time for me to start cooking! 聽Gotta get on the schedule! 聽Have a blessed day all!!!!

 

Am I Quiverfull?????

About a year ago, a very good friend “L” asked me if I was Quiverfull. 聽I really wasn’t sure what that meant, but I answered that I thought so. 聽With a smile and a sheepish grin. 聽Of course, as soon as she left the house I just had to google what Quiverfull really was!!!

I found several websites criticizing the “Quiverfull Movement” but none that actually told me what that WAS!!!!! 聽(Can you feel my frustration?) 聽I found an article over on patheos that gave me exactly what I wanted! *Warning – DO NOT go over there unless you plan on being patient with the ads!* 聽A real description of what this man believes the Quiverfull Movement is. 聽And I wanted to see if I was Quiverfull. 聽(Because it would be really funny if I was part of the movement and didn’t even know it!) 聽I’m going to go through His basic tenets and let you know what I believe in reference to them. 聽Got it? 聽good. 聽Because I’m not sure I do! 聽馃槈 馃槈

1. Quiverfullthe idea that God is in control of family planning. 聽Hmmmmm. 聽I have to be honest and say that until a few years ago I thought that I was in control of my fertility. 聽I am woman, hear me roar. 聽And then, with no outside influence at all, different Bible verses starting sticking out to me. 聽And I started to believe that protecting against children was like telling a boss that you didn’t want a raise. 聽Foolish, right? 聽But if God says that children are a blessing, then by protecting against being pregnant is like telling God not to bless me. 聽Ah. 聽So, I guess I do believe that God is in control of family planning.

2. Not a Denomination –聽there is no particular denomination associated with being Quiverfull. 聽Well, that’s good. 聽Cuz I’m a tried and true Southern Baptist. 馃槈

3. Patriarchy聽the belief that it is the father who is the head of the home, he聽serves as protector, provider and shepherd for his wife and children. 聽Well, yes. 聽I believe that too. 聽I believe that Papi is the head of the household. 聽He protects us as best he can, provides for us (he’s the only salary), and leads us in spiritual and other matters. 聽He’s not a dictator, I definitely have a voice, but he has the final say. 聽OK – that’s 3 for 3!

4. Courtship instead of Dating –聽the parents are very involved in the courtship process, and the fathers are ultimately in control of the entire thing.聽Well, yes, we practice courtship instead of dating. 聽I don’t believe that Papi is in charge of everything though. 聽We believe that it is an entire family thing. 聽Our entire family gets to know the other family. 聽We believe that by watching a family interact, it can speak volumes about how a young man will treat his wife or how a young woman will treat her husband.

5.聽Sheltering of the children聽– the parents isolate and control outside influences on the children.聽OK. 聽This one is a little different. 聽Do I isolate my children? 聽NO. 聽Please. 聽There are days I wonder how we are going to get any schoolwork done with all of our outside activities. 聽No one else in my church homeschools. 聽90% of my girls friends are public school children. 聽And a good portion of those aren’t Christians. 聽NOW, that being said….None of my children have cell phones. 聽The girls text their friends using my phone and I monitor all texts. 聽We’ve had boys before saying inappropriate things to Barbie…via text. 聽So for her safety (emotionally and physically) we made that choice. 聽Our children watch tv…though only Barbie gets to watch PG-13 without parental approval. 聽And come to think of it, she needs parental approval as well…she just has a little more leeway in her choices. 聽She’s a huge fan of gothic horror – so watching Vampire Diaries is not out of the question for her, as long as I’m watching with her. 聽We also allow our children to read books from the library. 聽And there was only one book (which the girls alerted me to) that we asked the library to switch into a different section. 聽Turns out that the book was inappropriate from standards for the children’s section and they created an entire section of that sort of book in the teen section….it was a comic book dealing in more mature (though not horrible) subject matter. 聽It was put with the Batman comics which my boys were reading prior to that – um,. NO!

6. Biblical Manhood and Womanhood聽 – the men are the spiritual and emotional leaders of the home, the women are home makers whose job is to raise a family.聽 Yeah. 聽Totally agree. 聽Though not all women want children – that’s cool it’s their choice. 聽I really feel that when a man is not leading his home he feels emasculated. 聽And when a woman is not being led in the home she is craving someone to lead her. 聽It doesn’t mean that the woman has to do what the man says as soon as he says it. 聽She has a voice and an opinion….and as long as she is not nagging him, she should use her voice. 聽I find in our relationship that most of the giant choices have been my ideas. 聽I vocalize them to hubby and then he takes FOREVER! to decide yes or no. 馃槈 聽When he says yes, I’ve already prepared and done a huge amount of research so that it can be implemented immediately. 聽馃檪

7. 聽Being debt-free and independent of government programs/subsidies – this leads to financial hardship and聽deprivation. 聽 聽OK. 聽If you do this incorrectly it can lead to deprivation. 聽But what exactly does that mean? 聽In our state, we would be legally qualified for financial aid for food. 聽SNAP I think the program is. 聽But we don’t need it. 聽Our kids eat – a TON! 聽And we somehow make it work. 聽None of our children are starving….we eat a ton of fresh fruit and veggies, chicken, fish, even steak! 聽And our dogs eat some of the most expensive food out there too (they have special diets due to medical needs). We buy new clothes for the kids almost every month. 聽Yes. 聽The majority of that is from thrift stores….but we also give at least a garbage bag of stuff to thrift stores every week as well. 聽We just don’t need everything we have. 聽We are still working our way out of debt and hope to be debt free (except for the house) within the year….instead of hurting us financially, this has helped us. 聽We have more cash to spend instead of huge credit card statements!

8.聽Home Church / Family-Integrated Church –聽this is so the parents can monitor more closely the children. 聽I couldn’t disagree more. 聽We don’t go to a home church or a family integrated church, though I sometimes wish we did. 聽I think the parents should be intimately involved in their children’s spiritual training. 聽For instance, there is a SS teacher in my church who has difficulty some days distinguishing between completely outlandish conspiracy theories and things that are actually happening in the world. 聽I ask my children every time after church what they learned….and there are some instances that I have to explain to my children the truth. 聽This leads to pretty good discussions about the false theory compared to what we believe.

and last but certainly not least….

9.聽Modesty –聽women must dress modestly so as to not “defraud” the men.聽We all know that men are visual. 聽But some women are as well. 聽I dress modestly, 90% of the time wearing longer skirts. 聽But I don’t force this on my girls. 聽I do adamantly stick to my guns as far as I don’t want to see underclothing at any time. 聽Skirts and dresses must pass the “bend over” test as well. 聽And no bikinis – full pieces period. 聽We also insist that the boys are modest. 聽No going without their shirts at any time. 聽And no visible boxers or they are liable to get atomic wedgies. (from their sisters!) 聽I’ve never been a clothing Nazi. 聽Well, except when we recently went to a Bible conference, I made all of the kids stick to the dress code perfectly. 馃槈 聽But they used their individual style. 聽Expressing themselves with bright and colorful tank tops, shoes, and accessories!

So, what do you think? 聽Am I聽QUIVERFULL? 聽I think I probably am. 聽I belong to a few facebook pages that are Quiverfull minded. 聽So I guess I am. 聽What do you think? 聽Am I?

Multi Colored Carriage Cover

There is a veritable baby boom among friends and family…so I am trying to kick out as many different baby items as possible.

In early May, my sis in law had a sweet baby boy and I crocheted a sleep sack and cap for him.

In late May (while we were traveling), a young woman at my church had a darling baby girl.

I used our traveling time to crochet a darling Carriage Cover. 聽I got the pattern out of a Bucilla Yarn Pattern Book from 1950. 聽It turned out beautifully.

Materials: 6 balls of yarn (or one of those giant ones) Crochet Hook Size 3

 

Approximate Size is 26″ by 32″. 聽Ch 170. 聽Work pattern 28 times.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, *skip 2 sts, a shell of 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st; repeat from * to end.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first sc, *1 sc in center dc of next shell, 1 shell of 5 dc in back loop of next sc; repeat from *, end 3 dc instead of 5 dc in last sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first dc, * 1 shell of 5 dc in back loop of next sc, 1 sc in center dc of next shell; repeat from *, end 1 sc in top of turning ch.

Border: Ch1, turn, 3 sc in first sc (corner), * 1 sc in each of next 5 dc, skip next sc; repeat from * working to corner; 3 sc in corner; continue sc on side; work other half to corner being careful to keep even edge and working each corner.

Round 2: Skip 1 sc, 10 dc in next sc (center sc at corner), * skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, skip 2 sc, 7 dc in next sc, repeat from * around, having a shell of 10 dc in center st at each corner. 聽Fasten off.

Add your favorite edging. 聽I did a small Picot stitch (my very favorite). 馃槈

Happy 4th of July

As you go about your day today, celebrating however you celebrate (we’re going to visit Papi’s family in Miami), remember the men and women who served and died so that you can wave that sparkler in the air. So that you can drink that beer. So that you can eat that watermelon.
Remember and give Thanks.
With all of our differences. With all of our infighting and fussing. We are Americans. Be thankful that God placed you in this nation, at this time, for this purpose.
